What Is the Best Strategy for Playing Roulette?

Have you ever wondered if there is a method you can apply to win this beloved casino game? Don’t go anywhere, cause we have the answers!

Strategies For Playing Roulette

If you ever played Roulette, either in a classic, a Vegas-themed, or rather an online casino, you must have heard or read about many theories and strategies for playing Roulette that are totally foolproof and promise you a guaranteed win. But how reliable are they? Is there really a way to increase your chances of winning when the wheel starts spinning?

Roulette was created way back in 17th century France, and it was the longest standing game tradition among the French nobles. Actually, the game itself is appropriately named and comes from the French language, meaning “little wheel”. The game was actually created by accident, by a well-known French scientist Pascall, who attempted to construct a perpetual spinning machine. And despite him ultimately failing to do so, he brought joy and excitement to many players around the world by creating Roulette.

In this article we will review all the less and more known strategies of Roulette, so you don’t have to. Whether they are actually working or not, however, still does not take away the appeal of the game, and Roulette tables are now more popular than ever at casinos!

What Are the Basics?

When playing Roulette, you will have to understand the layout of the table, which is somewhat different from one version of the game to another. The basics stay the same — you have a table with numbers on them and a wheel which is the croupier’s worry, all you need to do is place your bet and watch where the ball lands.

Maybe the most beloved version of Roulette is the French one, as you may have guessed. And why is that? Simply, this version has the lowest house edge, so all you need is a little bit of luck on your side to win at Roulette.

Aside from this one, there is also the European Roulette, which has a layout of numbers from 1 to 36, displayed in two colors — red and black. And above them, you will see number 0 written in a green field, which represents the house edge. The European wheel gives you a somewhat better chance of winning than the American, which we will explain next.

The American version is the easiest to recognize. Namely, besides a 0, it also has a 00 on the Roulette table. Meaning, the house advantage is actually doubled, so you should watch out when choosing a table to sit at!

The rules of betting are the same for all of these versions — all you need to do is place your chips on a single number, a color, or both. You can also bet on the rows, columns, odd or even numbers, it is completely up to you. The only rule you need to follow is to keep your hands off the table after the croupier announces: “No more bets!” That means he is about to throw the ball into the wheel, so you shouldn’t try to mess with the chips during all the haste. Many players attempt to do so, and it’s simply not respectable towards the game, the casino, or the other players.

Now, after we’ve covered the dos and don’ts of Roulette, we will move on to some strategies that many players attempt in an effort to increase their odds of winning.

The Martingale Strategy

This is the method that is most commonly applied to recover losses, which are bound to happen in any game of luck. Namely, this Roulette system advises you to increase your bet size each time you lose. You read that correctly — whenever you lose, you should actually double the original bet in the following round. That way, you will get a small profit in the long run. However, you can never know for sure if things will actually go as this theory suggests.

The Reverse Martingale

In this strategy for playing roulette, you need to increase your bet sizes after you win, and decrease them when you lose. This is a much safer option, as many players will tell you. Likewise, the Reverse Martingale method is most effective when applied on a table with a small minimum bet, and a high maximum one.

The Fibonacci Method

You have probably heard the term “Fibonacci sequence” in your 8th-grade math class — hence why it sounds so familiar. Leonardo of Pisa, otherwise known as Fibonacci, constructed a principle that is followed by many around the world, not just in math but in science, as well. This sequence contains numbers where each one is the sum of the two before it.

How does this apply to a game of Roulette? Well, you should increase your bet size accordingly, to mix things up. But keep in mind that it doesn’t actually increase your chances of winning at all.

The Doyne Farmer System

This one is actually more complex and it requires a more profound knowledge of mathematics. The strategy is named after a famous Cambridge professor and is related to the Chaos theory. This theory teaches us that there is a way to affect the dynamics of certain systems if we learn the basics of how they work.

Similarly, we can apply this principle to Roulette by predicting how many times the ball spins before it lands. However, it requires a lot of skill, not to mention that some wheels are more worn out than others. And when you think about, for example, the strength that each individual croupier puts into their throw, well, this theory is practically useless.

The James Bond Strategy

Have you ever watched Casino Royale? If the answer is yes, then you must have noticed that 007 is a passionate Roulette player. Ian Fleming, the creator of the many books about the handsome British spy, actually created a method of his own. This method is quite precise — first, you will need to take at least $200 aside from your bank account in order to apply this theory.

Next, you should post $140 on the second half of the table — the numbers between 19 and 36. Then, another $50 on numbers between 13 and 18, and $10 on a 0, because you never know. This way, if Flemings’ predictions were right, you will get a sweet payout, and fast. However, there is always a chance that the numbers from 1 to 12 will pop up, in which case you should maybe stick to Martingale.

Summary

Roulette is a game of luck, which means there is not a lot of skill you can apply in order to win. It’s not like poker with card counting, for example. You have a wheel and a little white ball, and you can not predict where will it land. So, when playing Roulette, you should just rely on your luck and hope for the best, rather than attempting strategies which are not guaranteed to work in the first place.
